Awesome! Words and Phrases...

Having lived for considerable periods in Ireland, England and America, my accent is a confusing mix of the three. Until recently it was just Irish/English, but since becoming a full time resident here, I've been finding the American influence sneaking in and I can't seem to stop it.

More than the accent, it seems to be the words and phrases I'm picking up on. In Dublin, I use turns of phrase that only make sense to the people there, who use them too. Some of these do make sense, but it would just be an unusual or quirky way of saying something, and people here find it strange. But sometimes, they are completely indecipherable. I am regularly faced with confused or blank expressions in response to something I've said. It doesn't help either that my name seems to be impossible to pronounce or remember for anyone who is not from Ireland.

Since moving here, I have picked up so many new words and phrases, just because of the influence of the people around me. My friends back home make fun of me relentlessly for this. Awesome? Sidewalk? Cell phone? None of these were a part of my active vocabulary a year ago! Now I say them all the time. Then there's the inevitable 'like'...try as I might, I don't seem to be able to get through a sentence without it these days.

What about you? Do people look at a loss when you say something that is completely normal where you're from? Do you find yourself picking up new words and phrases? And are your friends at home giving you hell over it?!

Don't ever let go of your Irish accent. It's a great accent to have in my opinion.

Awesome post! Everything in the US is awesome!! Even when it's just ok, in my opinion...
When people look at a loss when I say something, it's just because they don't understand me... but, I have to say, they do notice my accent.
The other night we had this long conversation about which accent is actually good to have and which one you don't really want to have. My friends said that the latin accent is something that you don't want to have. So it goes for the German. Or the French one... we debated a little bit about the British accent, but in the end, it seemed that the Italian one was the only good one. When my American friend started faking it to let me understand how it sounded like to her I felt really bad because it was terrible! I really hope I don't sound that bad. And in their opinion that was a nice accent to have!! I think they just said that because I was there..

I love the French accent, it is very cute especially for woman cause it seems to be a very delicate accent. I specially like British and Irish accent... apart from that I don't like any accent. But you know this comes from a Brazilian that can barely recognize where the different English accents come from :D
But to be honest, when foreign people speak Portuguese. I find their accents really charming. For me there aren't new expressions... speaking a different language I am just learning new words :D

My favourite is the Australian one. I just love it. I don't know why. But also French is so charming like Silvia said it's so soft and nice to hear especially from girls. And speaking about foreigners speaking in Portuguese, in my point of view, is so cute. My girlfriend is Canadian and we've been working on it, even though her pronunciation is quite nice, it still very "Gringo". But man! Trust me, it makes a commitment much more fun and we share knowledge about our lives all the time.
