Do you have a preference for the Vodka?

San Francisco - America is the country of choices. Customers are given tons of choices in every shopping situation, which sounds good in theory... but if you are not used to it and, like me, you don't give a damn, it just pisses you off. They overload you with questions like:
"An hamburger please" - How would you like your meat cooked?
"Vodka tonic please" - Do you have a preference for Vodka?
"An Italian sandwich for me" - Everything in it? What kind of bread do you want?
Best Buy, at the counter - Did you find everything you were looking for?
Every restaurant, 10 min after they bring the food - How's everything is going here?
You handle the credit card to the bartender - Keep the tab open or close?

Yesterday I got this one at Nordstrom, that I find pretty funny: "Receipt with you or in the bag?". Ah! Who cares?!

I think there should be a default choice in all these things and they just should not bother questioning. Does any question bother you? Write it in the comments.

(read on about shopping, eggs, coffee sizes and more in the comments...)

Ow... I REALLY know what you are talking about! First time I went to the supermarket here, I felt almost dizzy! So many options! and I didn't know any brand at that time, it was impossible to choose things!!

And what's about asking you every single time you go to a shop: Did you find everything all right? I'm surprised that at Nordstrom it was the first time somebody asked you about the receipt, I can see you don't do as much shopping as I do... cause the lady's ask me this every time, and I still couldn't understand what difference it makes.

Ordering breakfast is also funny: "How would you like your eggs? Bread, muffin or toast? what would you like on the side?" TOO complicated! I still haven't learned all the kinds and shapes of eggs I can ask for!

But I need to say: Breakfast here is amazingly good and going shopping is wonderful! I love the American prices! hehehe

Every time I get asked "debit or credit?" I feel a need to punch the cashier in the face.

Receipts should not be printed unless requested by the customer. And this doesn't mean the attendant should start asking if you want one... they should just stop.

"How would you like that cooked?" Just pick medium and say it in the menu... "all our burgers are cooked medium unless requested otherwise" done.

Eggs. I guess it's a little bit more reasonable to think to ask but I still think customers should be more explicit and specify ahead of time. Who orders just "eggs"?

Another thing I hate is brands making up their own sizes. That coffee company is famous for it but I've seen others do the same. What's wrong with Large, Medium and Small? Even worse... attendant's, when you ask for a medium coffee, play dumb and attempt to correct you into using their terminology... "We don't have medium... only tall, large and venti..." Fuck you too.

I do agree that asking about the receipt in the bag did sound really stupid to me too. What is the problem of getting it out of the bag if I need it?

But I must say that I really like to be able to choose my Vodka brand and it is specially important when I know I'm going to come back for more, some brands, at least with me, are a lot better in the hangover part. :)

Talking about questions, Ireland is the only countries i've been in which you can go to a shop, pay your grocery with a laser card, and you can be asked "Cash back?"
First time it happened i thought "wow, you pay for grocery and they give you discounts!", then i realized that they meant if i wanted to withdraw some money without the need of going to the ATM machine.
Pretty handy in some occasions, especially because in the countryside ATM machines are not easily found!
Does it happen in your countries too?

The Cash Back is pretty popular in America too. But since I'm in California I'm almost not using cash anymore! I like that here it's perfectly reasonable to pay your 1.55$ coffee with the credit card (and your 4$ beer as well), while in Italy bars and coffee shops does not even have the credit card machine and other stores complain and make you fell like shit if you hand the credit card for bill less then 10 euros. Go figure!

I'm so glad someone else brought up the eggs thing! First time I went for breakfast here (in Bette's Ocean View Diner in Berkeley, which I highly recommend) I was very confused by all the egg options - over easy? What does this mean?! I was so confused, I ended up getting scrambled, not because I wanted it but because it was the only one I understood.

I also get completely overwhelmed by the supermarket. There was a whole aisle of pickles! Does anyone need this much choice?!

The two worst offenders for overloading you with too many choices are without doubt Subway and Starbucks. I have never been able to order a sandwich in Subway because I always end up feeling overwhelmed and confused and leaving before completing my order. Too many questions! Stressful. As for Starbucks, a place I avoid for at least 25 reasons, they have this made-up secret language that I don't understand...I just want a coffee please (and preferably one that is not 90% foam, thank you!)
